The four checks
Each one can fail on its own.
The checks stay separate so a copied tag, a dead signature, or a missing artist are not collapsed into one vague warning.
- Artist identity confirmed
- Certificate remains authentic
- Physical work matches the record
- Custody history, where the parties shared it
The answer
Verified, failed, tampered, or unable to read.
Verified means the checked artist signed this certificate, and this object matches the record. Failed means it does not. Tampered means the tag or the bind does not hold. Unable to read means the phone could not complete the check.
A PDF in an email cannot run these checks. The tag is on the object. The record is the one the artist signed.
The limit
A check of the record, not of the painting's history.
The verify moment does not decide who made the work in an art-historical sense. It does not move title. It tells you whether this object is the one the signed record names, and whether that signature still holds.
None of these results is a finding about legal title, and none is an opinion that someone painted the work.
